Environmental Sustainability

Lilydale West Primary School cares about the environment...

Our school is taking action to become more environmentally sustainable through a Victorian Government initiative called ResourceSmart AuSSI Vic.

ResourceSmart AuSSI Vic is a program that helps our school embed sustainability in everything we do. We are aiming to reduce our resource use (such as electricity and water) and support indigenous plants and animals. We would like to involve all students, teachers, families and other members of our school and local community. We are working with CERES Environment Park on the actions of the Core Module.

We can’t wait to reduce our school’s impact on the environment and share our achievements with you.

We continue to implement the following practices:

  • Empty buckets are under all taps in order to catch drips and spilt water. These are emptied by our students onto plants around the school.
  • Signage has been placed around the school to encourage children to not waste water.
  • Integrated Units have been developed and studied in class focussing on “Water”.

We continue to implement the following practices:

  • Concerted efforts are made to reduce electricity use by turning off lights and equipment in classrooms when not in use.
  • Awards to encourage energy saving in class rooms.

We continue to implement the following practices:

  • Composting all our food scraps into our compost bins and worm farms. The compost and worms help the gardens around the school.
  • We apply for grants to establish and update various gardens around the school.

We continue to implement the following practices:

  • “Rubbish Free Sounds Good to Me!” Our school encourages students to bring rubbish free lunches or take rubbish home.  This is so that rubbish is not taken out in yard which may lead to the pollution of our school environment or our neighbour’s.

These bins are in every LWPS classroom!
